JSP Enviro, an IIT Madras-incubated start-up, has developed a new wastewater treatment technology called the ‘Bio-Electrochemical Anaerobic Digester System’ or BEADS.

The technology, which uses microbial treatment to increase the rate of organic waste degradation, aims to deliver cost savings, energy recovery and carbon reduction for industries by managing wastewater and reducing carbon footprint.

BEADS has been successfully deployed across industries in Erode and Perundurai, Tamil Nadu. The start-up is now looking to scale up its product deployment across India, serving industries across all sectors.

Climate advantage

According to founder Priyadharshini Mani, the technology can treat 100 cubic meters of effluent per day and avoids nearly 80 tons of carbon dioxide emissions annually.  “Beyond operational savings, BEADS also delivers measurable climate benefits. With global markets opening carbon credit opportunities and the European Union introducing carbon taxes, Indian manufacturers adopting the technology stand to gain financially from their emission reductions,” she added.

RoI outlook

The company estimates that most installations can achieve a return on investment within 3 to 4 years. Currently, JSP Enviro is working with textile and dyeing clusters in the SIPCOT industrial regions of Perundurai and Erode. It is also preparing to expand into sectors such as food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, and specialty chemicals, according to a release.
