— The Whitefish Area Property Owners Association annual meeting will be Saturday, July 27, in the social hall at Immaculate Heart Church in Crosslake.
All are welcome to attend, including non-WAPOA members.
Coffee and rolls will be served starting at 8 a.m. A short business meeting will be conducted at 9 a.m. followed by keynote speaker Kirsti Marohn.
Partner organizations, including the National Loon Center, Crow Wing County Sheriff Water Patrol and the Whitefish Chain Yacht Club, will be available from 8-9 a.m. to answer questions about shoreland restoration, water quality and water safety.
Other organizations include the Pine River Watershed Alliance, Northern Waters Land Trust and the Minnesota Aquatic Invasive Species Research Center.
Marohn is an award-winning journalist who has spent more than two decades writing stories to help Minnesotans better understand the natural world. She is a correspondent for MPR News, where she writes about central Minnesota communities, people and the environment.
Marohn will share her observations about the environment and water quality gleaned from over two decades of reporting on the environment, energy and water.
Marohn grew up in Nisswa and graduated from the University of Minnesota. She spent 18 years as a reporter at the St. Cloud Times, where she covered state and local government and environmental issues.
For the past seven years, she has been a reporter for MPR News. She was part of an MPR News team that earned an award for a 2018 series about the impacts of aquatic invasive species in Minnesota. She is working on an upcoming MPR series about the loss of natural shoreline on Minnesota lakes.
Marohn lives in Brainerd with her husband and their two daughters. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, reading, traveling and spending as much time in a canoe or kayak as possible.
