Vanguard to acquire wealth platform Altruist in $4bn deal

Vanguard is set to make the biggest acquisition in its history after agreeing a deal to buy Altruist, a wealth technology and custody platform.

The transaction is valued at around $4 billion in all-cash deal, according to a Reuters report.

The move marks a significant departure for Vanguard which has tended to grow organically rather than via acquisition and is now considered to be the largest provider of mutual funds with more than $12 trillion in assets under management.

Under the terms of the transaction, Altruist will continue to operate as a standalone entity in terms of its business model, technology and leadership.

The platform is designed for independent advisors, enabling them to offer custody and trading services to their wealth management clients.

Vanguard has been an investor in the company since 2020. By April 2025, Altruist was valued at $1.9 billion, a valuation that appears to have doubled since then, based on the acquisition price.

According to Vanguard CEO Salim Ramji, the aim of the acquisition is to increase the operational reach and capacity of financial advisors. “Many investors in Vanguard funds choose to work with financial advisors, and far more people could benefit from access to financial advice than the industry can serve today.”

“The need is broad, but the capacity to provide high-quality advice is limited. Technology can help close that gap by enabling advisors to serve more people and serve them better, while preserving the human judgment and relationships at the centre of good financial advice.”

“Vanguard shares our conviction in that mission, and their trusted investment expertise and resources will enable us to pursue it with greater speed and reach,” added Altruist founder and CEO Jason Wenk.

The transaction continues a period of prolific M&A activity in the wealth management and registered investment adviser (RIA) space.

According to Fidelity’s M&A in Wealth Management 2026 Midyear Update published this week, there have been 120 RIA transactions totalling $342.9 billion in acquired client assets in the first half of 2026, which represents a slight increase in value from the previous year.
