Hyderabad-based Cygni Energy Pvt Ltd, an energy storage technology and manufacturing company, and Indus Towers Ltd, a telecom tower infrastructure provider, have collaborated to explore the sourcing of energy storage solutions for telecom infrastructure in India.
In a press release, the companies said they have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to explore setting up up to 1.5 GWh of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) manufacturing capacity. The collaboration aims to address the evolving energy requirements of telecom infrastructure in India.
The collaboration is also expected to evaluate advanced battery technologies for telecom applications, with the aim of enhancing reliability, improving energy efficiency, and enabling more sustainable telecom operations.
The partnership represents a growing collaboration between technology developers, infrastructure providers, and manufacturing companies, particularly as India strengthens the integration of its digital and energy infrastructure.
For the energy sector, such collaborations could support indigenous innovation, strengthen supply-chain resilience, and accelerate the adoption of next-generation energy storage solutions.
Cygni Aligns With BESS Gigafactory Target
Last year, Cygni Energy commenced Phase I of its BESS gigafactory. In 2025, Cygni Energy shared plans to set up a 160,000 sq. ft. Phase-I facility on a 5-acre campus, with a planned capacity of 4.8 GWh for battery packs for electric vehicles and energy storage systems. With an investment of over ₹100 crore, the facility was planned to cater to large-scale stationary storage projects and independent power producers (IPPs).
Cygni Energy has also been working on India-specific sodium-ion-based energy storage solutions in collaboration with Chinese battery technology company HiNa Battery Technologies. The partnership focuses on developing sodium-ion solutions that can offer lower costs, improved safety, and faster charging capabilities, including charging times of around 20 minutes.
Telecom-BESS Growing Nexus
Commenting on the latest partnership, Venkat Rajaraman, Founder & CEO, Cygni Energy, said, “For us, this initiative goes beyond supplying batteries. It is about building the scale, technology capabilities and manufacturing readiness required to support the evolving energy needs of one of the world’s largest passive telecom infrastructure companies.”
Rajaraman added, “We plan to develop capacity of up to 2 GWh, while building a portfolio that can evolve from today’s 100Ah solutions to higher-capacity 314Ah systems and emerging battery technologies. Our ambition is to combine scale, reliability and Indian engineering to create future-ready energy storage solutions that can evolve alongside India’s rapidly expanding digital infrastructure.”
Commenting on the significance of such collaborations, Ashok Jhunjhunwala, Institute Professor, IIT Madras, and Chairman, ITEL Foundation, said, “Collaboration between users, startups, manufacturers and technology institutions can support the development and adoption of energy storage solutions in India. Telecom provides an important application for advancing battery technologies and manufacturing capabilities in this space.”
