Students and parents save during tax-free weekend, prepare for new academic year

Tax free weekend wrapped up on Sunday night and several school districts are going back to class on Monday morning.

School districts beginning classes on Monday are:

  • Alamo Heights ISD
  • Boerne ISD
  • Harlandale ISD
  • North East ISD
  • South San Antonio ISD
  • Southside ISD

We spoke to parents and students doing their back-to-school shopping over the tax-free weekend. They told us they’re not ready for the new school year, but the tax-free weekend is at least taking some stress off their wallets.

“Me and my wife, both are working, and we won’t get much time to spend with the kids. The last three months were good when they were on holiday, now we are looking forward to the new academic year,” said Vikram Rao, who has a daughter in 7th grade.

Rao’s daughter will begin classes soon. Although Rao said the summer flew by, he admits tax-free weekend makes his money last longer.

“That really helps us to a great extent and then probably the taxable amount we can probably buy some more stuff related to the school,” said Rao.

It’s a similar story for Earren Allen and Cheyenne Birk who are starting their junior year in college.

“We’re not buying a lot so probably like a couple of dollars, but still, since we’re college students, it’s still helpful,” said Birk.

Now that they have the supplies they need, Allen and Birk told us it’s all about preparing mentally for the new semester.

“Getting back into a routine, waking up early, and starting to have more responsibilities with work, school, and things outside of life, you know?” asked Allen.
