CINCINNATI (WXIX) – The Hamilton County Board of Commissioners has approved funding for a new Cincinnati Animal CARE building to replace its existing location on Colerain Avenue.
The commissioners approved $10 million for the construction of a new building near the intersection of Gray and Winston roads. It would also pay for an expansion of the Dana Avenue location.
Meaghan Colville, director of Cincinnati Animal CARE, said the Colerain Avenue building was built in the 1960s.
“We are very outdated when it comes to animal shelters,” Colville said. “We’re desperate for space and a new facility and even with that land purchase it’s probably three, four, five years away.”
The Dane Avenue location was a warehouse. Renovations on the building are scheduled to begin in January 2025, but Colville said getting more space can’t come soon enough.
“We’ve got about 120 dogs packed in there and it is loud,” Colville said. “We don’t have enough drains, we don’t have enough hoses and so simple things like that make cleaning very difficult. We get it done, but it is challenging.”
Besides more space for animals, the new facility and renovations will add more office space for employees. Colville said there are around four to five employees using each office at the Colerain Avenue location.
