Cathie Wood’s ARK Venture Fund holds a $69 million position in OpenAI. Among major public funds, no one else has a bigger slice of their portfolio tied to the ChatGPT maker.
Inside the OpenAI position
The OpenAI stake makes up roughly 5.26% to 5.41% of the fund’s net assets, depending on the snapshot date. The fund, which trades under the ticker ARKVX, managed around $1.3 billion in total assets as of mid-2026.
As of August 31, 2026, SpaceX held the top spot at 7.54% of the portfolio. OpenAI came second at 5.26%, followed by Anthropic at 3.86%.
Prediction market Kalshi and payments company Stripe also sit among the top holdings, based on portfolio snapshots from late August and September 2026.
Private companies account for between 62% and 78% of the ARKVX portfolio, with the figure shifting by reporting date.
How ARK built the bet
ARK first disclosed its OpenAI investment in April 2024. At that point, the position represented roughly 4% of what was then a smaller portfolio.
ARK put at least $250 million into OpenAI’s October 2024 funding round.
The fund launched in September 2022 with a minimum investment of $500, opening the door to retail buyers who do not meet accredited investor thresholds for income or net worth.
The Ethereum angle
On September 24, 2026, ARK announced a tokenization initiative for the fund. Eligible US investors can now acquire ARKVX shares on Ethereum using USDC, the dollar-pegged stablecoin. The portfolio structure and performance measures stay the same.
Redemptions remain capped on a quarterly basis, typically at 5% of shares.
What this means for investors
SpaceX, OpenAI and Anthropic alone account for roughly a fifth of the portfolio, concentrating exposure across a small group of private technology companies. Private holdings do not trade on an exchange, so their marked values update less often than public stocks. Investors should treat the $69 million figure as a point-in-time snapshot rather than a live price.
The tokenization initiative places ARKVX shares onchain and settles purchases in USDC, with access limited to eligible US investors and subject to quarterly redemption limits.
