LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – As part of the decommissioning process of Duke Energy’s now retired Gallagher Station in Floyd County, Indiana, a controlled implosion of the facility’s boiler house took place Saturday morning.
The implosion happened around 9 a.m. to a 193-foot-tall by 500-foot wide section of the building.
Many in Louisville and southern Indiana heard the sound of the booms as it happened or saw the dust cloud. In an estimate given before the implosion, officials said the loud noise from the implosion should have lasted less than 10 seconds and the dust cloud should have dissipated within 15-20 minutes.
The boiler house was the only structure demolished during the implosion, with the chimneys being set to be dismantled in pieces over the next several months.
