Independent Age urges older adults to check their eligibility for certain benefits
What to know about Independent Age’s advice to older adults
- Independent Age is encouraging older people living with long-term health conditions to reach out to them directly for support in claiming benefits, securing Council Tax reductions and obtaining help with their everyday care requirements. The charity has unveiled a new online resource for people reaching State Pension age, encouraging them to ensure they are accessing all the support available in their golden years.
- According to the Daily Record, Independent Age said: “Whether you’ve just been diagnosed or have been managing your condition for some time, life can have its challenges when you have a long-term health condition. But with a few simple steps and the right support, you can take control, manage your condition and live well.”
- Independent Age explained that if you are struggling to cope with everyday activities, a care needs assessment can help determine the care and support you need, along with the most effective ways to access it. This support may include anything from Meals on Wheels to a care assistant for help with activities such as bathing, dressing, or managing medication. Care needs assessments are generally accessible via your local council’s adult social care department.
- Older adults on low incomes may also qualify for Council Tax reductions. Most councils feature a dedicated Council Tax section on their local authority website, detailing various ways to qualify for a bill discount or reduction.
- Finally, Independent Age has stressed that many people are missing out on benefits they are genuinely entitled to claiming. The charity added: “So many people are not claiming the benefits that they are entitled to and as a result, missing out on extra money each week. Even if you think you’re getting everything you’re entitled to, it’s worth checking.”
- You can use the charity’s free, confidential online benefits calculator to determine precisely what you can claim and receive a personalised report. Complete details are here. Anyone can also access or download the charity’s complete guide online here, or order a complimentary copy.
