Health officials have confirmed that there has been an increased number of cases of a new strain of Covid-19 in Wales. Across the world cases of the SARS-CoV-2 variant BA.3.2, known as Cicada, which is a highly mutated strain of the virus that could be very contagious.
Alongside the UK, the variant has been detected in 22 other countries since it was first identified in South Africa in 2024. The UK Health Security Agency have been monitoring the strain after it was detected in England in September 2025.
In February this year the Cicada Covid variant was detected in the UK and Public Health Wales has said they are monitoring the virus after “seeing an increase in the proportion of this variant.” Stay informed on the latest health news by signing up to our newsletter here
A spokesperson for Public Health Wales said: “We continue to monitor emerging COVID-19 variants, including BA.3.2, alongside our partners across the UK.
“While we are seeing an increase in the proportion of this variant, overall COVID-19 activity remains within the range we would expect to see at this time of year. Our surveillance systems are designed to detect changes in virus activity, and we will continue to assess all available data to understand any potential impact on public health.”
