Penrith’s Birbeck Medical Group holds men’s health day

Birbeck Medical Group hosted the event to encourage men to come forward for check-ups and open up about their health.

The focus was on heart attack and stroke risk, as well as general wellbeing—topics men are often less likely to discuss with their GP.

Dr Dominic Arnold, a GP at Birbeck Medical Group, said: “We’ve advertised the just for men to try and make them feel more comfortable and more likely to come and see us for a routine health check, asking about their risks of heart attacks and strokes and how they’re doing and feeling.

“Also asking about other things that they may not have come and seen the doctor about it in general, so it’s been a really positive event to promote the health of men locally.

“We know often men don’t come to the doctor or talk about how they’re doing.

“We’ve had great uptake out for it, all the appointments have been booked.

“It’s not just about people’s cardiovascular health, it’s all about the well-being of men in general and how we can promote that locally.”

Andy’s Man Club Penrith was also present at the event.

Representatives spoke with attendees about the importance of looking after both body and mind.

Dr Arnold said: “We’re really fortunate to say have Andy’s Man Club here, which is a great organisation.”

The Penrith group of Andy’s Man Club meets every Monday at the cricket club, except on bank holidays.

Men are often less likely to visit their GP.

The presence of Andy’s Man Club highlighted the importance of mental wellbeing alongside physical health.

Attendees were reminded that looking after your health includes both body and mind.
