NHS Couch to 5K hits 1 billion minutes of movement and 8 million app downloads after decade-long collaboration with BBC


This month, the BBC will mark the ten-year anniversary of NHS Couch to 5K, the groundbreaking free running plan aimed at beginners.

Over the last decade, the BBC’s collaboration with the Department of Health & Social Care on the NHS Couch to 5K app has led to over 8 million lifetime downloads and supported over 1 billion minutes of movement as people across the UK have taken steps toward a healthier, more active lifestyle.

Since its inception, the initiative has transformed the way beginners approach getting active, offering an accessible and supportive pathway from inactivity to running continuously for 30 minutes and around 5 kilometres in as little as 9 weeks.

To mark the occasion, there’ll be a raft of special programming to encourage even more people to take part in the programme and to show how easy it is to download the app, lace up a pair of trainers and improve fitness levels.

The BBC Sport Couch to 5K Podcast, presented by Giovanna Fletcher, is available on BBC Sounds and offers runners an entertaining listen, words of motivation and inspiring interviews with the likes of Jo Whiley, John Robins, Charley Marlowe and Harry and Izzy Judd about their fitness journeys.

There’s also a Traitors special and additional “Ask the Expert” bonus episodes where Olympian Steve Cram, Dr Punam Krishan and celebrity trainer Prof Greg Whyte answer some of the most asked beginner runner questions around kit, injuries, nutrition and motivation. Whether you’re preparing for your first run or getting back into the rhythm, the podcast brings warmth, encouragement, and real-life inspiration to help you stay on track.

For the second year running, Morning Live has teamed up with the Great Manchester Run to offer a bespoke 5K route. 200 Morning Live viewers will have the chance to sign up and run a 5K route finishing at the main Great Manchester Run finish line alongside other participants. Members of the Morning Live team, including Dr Punam Krishan, have shared their previous NHS Couch to 5K journeys and Dr Oscar Duke will use the app to prepare for the Greater Manchester Run this year.

Dr Oscar was born with the genetic condition Albinism, and has a visual impairment. As a result, he has found running outside challenging but will be taking part in the Great Manchester Run with Morning Live host Gethin Jones assisting him as his guide runner. A dedicated Morning Live NHS Couch to 5K Facebook group is also available to give viewers a space to share progress, advice and motivation, including input from the Morning Live on-air experts. BBC Morning Live airs on weekdays at 9:30 on BBC One and iPlayer.

BBC Breakfast will interview NHS Couch to 5K participants to hear how the app has helped them on their running journeys. One runner who opted to listen to the voice of Olympian and app Coach Denise Lewis while using NHS Couch to 5K will be surprised by a video call from Denise, who offers some encouraging words. Doctor Oscar Duke also features to highlight the benefits of running for mental and physical health.

BBC Asian Network presenters and DJs will put NHS Couch to 5K to the test starting this month. Amber Haque, Dipps Bhamrah, Gura Randhawa, Harleen Nottay, Haroon Rashid, Jaz Singh, Nikita Kanda, Pritt, SMASHBengali and Vallisa Chauhan will be taking part in the weekly runs and regularly updating listeners on their progress as well as inspiring others to give it a go.

BBC Radio nan Gàidheal will have their own presenters record encouraging voice notes in Gàidhlig, similar to phrases used in the app, to motivate listeners to give running a try. They will also chat to members of their production team who have tried the NHS Couch to 5K themselves to hear about their running journeys and will have the best playlists for running to keep you on track to reach 5K.

BBC Radio Wales will host a special phone-in for their listeners with Jason Mohammad. Jason will hear from real life success stories who have used the NHS Couch to 5K app, including someone who started running last year and will now be running the London Marathon this weekend.

To round off the week of celebrations, a host of famous faces will send in happy birthday messages for NHS Couch to 5K and these will be available across the BBC Sport website and social media channels.

NHS Couch to 5K will be featured in the BBC One coverage of the upcoming London Marathon on the 26 April to encourage viewers to download the app and start their own running journey. London Marathon presenter Gabby Logan will be speaking to people around the course who have used the app to start their training, going from 5k runs to now running the Marathon. The BBC One coverage begins at 8.30am on the 26 April.

The mental clarity and the physical benefits are huge, plus it’s free and can be done anywhere at any time. My advice to those wanting to kickstart their running journey is simply to download the app, pick up your trainers and give it a go – we’ll be in your ears encouraging you every step of the way!”

NHS Couch to 5K is a running plan for absolute beginners. It is based on the plan designed by Josh Clark in 1996, who wanted to help his 50-something mum get off the couch and start running. The plan involves 3 runs a week, with a day of rest in between, and a different schedule for each of the 9 weeks. The idea behind the programme was to gradually build endurance and stamina over the course of several weeks, starting with short intervals of running interspersed with walking.

New analysis of NHS Couch to 5K app data shows the app has supported over 1 billion minutes of activity. Using anonymised usage data, the Department of Health and Social Care provided analysis of total walking and running minutes undertaken by users following the structured plan. Analysis date range used: 18-06-2021 to 26-11-2025.
