AI as Co-Pilot: Trust in Wealth Management


For a decade or more, innovation in wealth management has followed a familiar pattern: introduce a new capability, bolt it onto the existing tech stack and then build workarounds for everything that doesn’t integrate. Each upgrade promised progress. In practice, many created the opposite—fragmented data, disconnected workflows and greater operational burden for advisors already navigating multiple systems.

Artificial intelligence has the potential to break that cycle—but not by becoming another feature in the stack. Its real promise lies in embedding intelligence directly into the workflows advisors rely on every day. When AI is woven into the operating fabric of a platform rather than layered on top of it, it begins to reshape how advice is delivered.

Yet before AI can meaningfully transform wealth management, it must overcome a fundamental challenge: trust.

According to findings from our 2026 Connected Wealth Report, 74% of advisors view AI as an advantage rather than a threat. At the same time, a significant trust gap persists: 93% want the final say over AI outputs, and 55% cite compliance and regulatory hurdles as the primary reasons they hesitate to use AI.

Trust takes time, but several operating principles can help move firms from skepticism to confidence:

Use AI as Co-pilot, Not Autopilot

In a profession built on fiduciary responsibility, concerns about control are not obstacles—they’re safeguards. Advisors are accountable for every recommendation and client outcome, so AI must operate within structures that preserve oversight.

Treating AI as a co-pilot rather than defaulting to autopilot allows firms to uphold fiduciary standards while gaining scalability. It also gives advisors a controlled way to build confidence in the technology over time.

The most effective implementations formalize “trust but verify” workflows. For example, AI can draft portfolio commentary, meeting recaps and client follow-up emails while the advisor reviews the content and determines what ultimately reaches the client. Similarly, AI can continuously monitor household data and flag anomalies—such as sudden shifts in cash flow or asset allocation—while the advisor decides whether those signals warrant action.

Structured this way, AI becomes a force multiplier rather than a decision-maker.

Delegate the Repetitive, Elevate the Strategic

Advisors do not want AI to replace judgment; they want it to expand their capacity.

Meeting summaries, CRM updates and preparation for client reviews are high-frequency, low-risk activities that advisors can confidently delegate to AI. While essential to running a practice, they rarely showcase an advisor’s true value, and they consume time that would be better spent thinking critically and engaging with clients.

When these functions are automated reliably, the impact is not just efficiency—it is capacity. Advisors gain the ability to focus on the work clients value most: strategic planning, proactive communication and deeper relationship management.

Prioritize Data Hygiene and Enterprise Security

Even as adoption grows, advisors remain cautious for good reason. Fewer than one-quarter say they are fully confident their current AI tools meet regulatory standards. Without that assurance, many firms limit AI to peripheral tasks such as note-taking or marketing automation rather than embedding it into the core advisory workflow.

Trust begins with infrastructure. AI systems must be compliant by design, not compliance-tested after the fact. That means clear audit trails showing how outputs were generated, strict data governance that prevents proprietary client data from training external models, and explainable architectures that allow advisors to understand the logic behind recommendations.

In a regulated industry built on accountability, trust is not created by features—it is engineered into the system itself.

Establish Governance Before You Scale AI

Design and process alone cannot establish confidence in AI. Governance plays an equally important role.

As AI becomes more embedded in daily workflows, many firms are adopting stronger governance practices. A common starting point is aligning with frameworks such as the NIST AI Risk Management Framework and establishing formal AI usage policies and governance committees to oversee how these systems are designed, deployed, and monitored. Effective committees typically include leaders from information security, risk management, engineering, legal, product and operations, ensuring decisions reflect both technological realities and regulatory expectations.

Governance is not about slowing innovation—it is about creating the conditions where innovation can scale responsibly. Clear guardrails eliminate uncertainty, reduce the risk of shadow AI and allow organizations to integrate AI capabilities more confidently across the business.

The next phase of innovation in wealth management will not be defined by how many AI tools firms adopt. It will be defined by how intelligently those capabilities are embedded into the advisor experience.

When AI operates within the workflows advisors already use, it stops being a novelty and becomes infrastructure.

That shift is what ultimately turns AI from an experiment into an advantage. And the firms that get there first will not be the ones with the most automation, but the ones that earn the most trust in how that automation works.
