Ambient voice technology: implications for nursing documentation

How ambient voice technology can support nursing documentation, but does not replace professional judgement or accountability.

Abstract

Accurate, timely documentation is essential for safe nursing, but many nurses face growing administrative pressure when using electronic patient records. Some NHS services are introducing ambient voice technology to ease this workload, yet guidance on safe use in nursing is limited. Drawing on clinical experience in a specialist service, and informed by current policy and professional standards, this article looks at how ambient voice tools can support documentation. It outlines when the technology may or may not be appropriate, the need for sound professional judgement, awareness of potential bias, clear communication, and nurses’ continued accountability under the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s Code.
