AARP Hawai’i Empowers Kupuna with Technology and Brain Health Resources

In an increasingly digital world, it’s vital for kupuna to stay connected and informed. Jackie Boland from AARP Hawai’i appeared on Living808 to discuss AARP’s initiatives to help elders embrace technology and maintain brain health.

Jackie shared that AARP Hawai’i has partnered with Senior Planet to offer free in-person classes on Oahu and Maui. Senior Planet, part of AARP, has been educating seniors about technology for 20 years, and their classes aim to empower kupuna with the digital skills they need.

On Friday, August 2nd, the Kaunoa Senior Center in Paia will host sessions on online privacy at 9 AM and recognizing AI-generated content at 10:30 AM. On Saturday, August 3rd, the Generations Magazine Aging in Place conference at the Ala Moana Hotel will offer six sessions between 8 AM and 2:30 PM, covering topics like Smart Homes, Digital Wallets, Streaming and Smart TVs, care and housing options, brain health, and fraud prevention.

For those unable to attend in person, Senior Planet offers online courses at seniorplanet.org, along with a toll-free hotline (888-713-3495) for direct assistance from tech trainers. AARP Hawai’i also seeks local nonprofits to help teach kupuna about technology, providing free access to Senior Planet’s curriculum.

AARP Hawai’i has a busy month ahead with various events, including a Telephone Town Hall with U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz on August 14th, discussing Social Security, and the launch of a new campaign, “When You Wen Grad?” targeting graduates from 1977 to 1990 to consider Social Security and Medicare in their retirement plans. Additionally, an Aging in Place conference on Maui is scheduled for August 24th, with sessions on legal issues, fall prevention, decluttering, and home modification.
