Letter to the editor: Keystone should approve the lodging tax and other ballot issues

This election season, the voters of Keystone face a pivotal decision that will shape the future of our growing town. Two important ballot initiatives are up for consideration: Town of Keystone Ballot Issue 2A (2% Lodging Tax) and 2B (de-Brucing).

First, ballot issue 2B allows the town to retain funds from various revenue sources, facilitating longer-term savings and enabling the funding of projects that span multiple fiscal years. These projects are likely to include workforce housing, public infrastructure improvements and investments in open space. Additionally, many grants — essentially free money for the town — can only be accessed if we are de-Bruced. I encourage everyone to vote yes on Ballot Issue 2B.

Secondly, Ballot Issue 2A seeks to restore the 2% lodging tax, which visitors and tourists pay during their stay. This tax was previously in place through Summit County and is significantly lower than those in neighboring towns. Keystone faces considerable costs associated with being a tourist destination, and if this lodging tax is not reinstated, those costs will likely burden our local taxpayers. The tax applies only to short-term stays and would generate revenue specifically for capital infrastructure projects, road safety maintenance, and public safety—crucial areas for our town’s future as visitor numbers continue to rise. Vote yes to ensure that visitors contribute their fair share and to empower our town to invest in its future.

Please vote yes on 2A and 2B by Nov. 5 to make your voice heard and improve our town’s outlook and prospects.
