SARASOTA, Fla. (WWSB) – If you didn’t stock up on storm supplies this year, or maybe ran low after the wrath of Hurricane Debby, the State of Florida is lending a helping hand. Saturday kicked off the states second Disaster Preparedness Sales Tax Holiday this year.
Until Sept. 6, residents can purchase severe weather basics like batteries, flashlights, smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and portable generators sales tax free.
The measure was passed by the Florida Legislature, and signed into law by Governor Ron DeSantis to help people stay prepared ahead of storm season.
At Home Depot off University Parkway in Sarasota, shoppers were greeted with signs outside promoting the savings opportunity.
“I think that it’s nice that they’re allowing batteries, flashlights, smoke detectors, everything like that and that’s what we need to prepare for the storm season, and I think that it’s great that they’re doing it a tax free especially to help people after Hurricane Debby rolled in, ” said Krystle Crofut as she shopped with her family Saturday morning.
