Neglected horses removed from Reno County property, surrendered to rescue

RENO COUNTY, Kan. (KWCH) – Two neglected horses, removed from a property north of Hutchinson, are in the care of a rescue group that’s working to restore their health. That’s a task, that Storm Creek Horse Co. Farm & Rescue says, comes with a vet bill it describes as “massive.”

At about 9 a.m. Wednesday, Storm Creek said it, along with the Reno County Sheriff’s Office, removed the horses from the property and that the owner surrendered them to the rescue.

The horses include a stallion reported to be eight years old and a filly reported to be three years old.

Storm Creek said the stallion “has odd bumps all over him,” and it’s unclear if these could be bits or melanoma.

“The filly’s hair is falling out in big clumps and I think she’s got something wrong with her teeth,” the rescue said. “She brightens for a few seconds and then goes back to dull and listless.”

The rescue said that the stallion “was completely unhandled (never had a halter on before [Wednesday]) and is showing some slight aggression.” Storm Creek said the filly had worn a halter before but hadn’t been led.

“These guys need vet care, deworming, hoof care, and feed in addition to training,” the rescue said.

“We can always use supplies like hay, dewormer, minerals, joint supplement, and Optizyme. We are in desperate need of water tanks and fence panels,” Storm Creek said.

In an update Wednesday afternoon, the rescue reported that an anonymous donor reached out and, through Labor Day, offered to match donations up to $500 to help the two neglected horses.
