TCPalm interviews St. Lucie County GOP property appraiser candidates
Republican St. Lucie County property appraiser candidates Michelle Franklin and Joe James answer TCPalm Editorial Board questions on July 18, 2024.
Incumbent Michelle Franklin beat challenger Joe James in the GOP primary for St. Lucie County property appraiser.
But she hasn’t officially won her job back just yet, as she’ll face a write-in candidate in the Nov. 5 general election. Franklin’s name will appear on the ballot, but the write-in candidate’s name will not.
Franklin, who was first elected in 2016, campaigned on implementing new technology to expand online services, improve the customer experience and increase data security.
She also said she would make it easier for property owners to file for exemptions online, and deploy an automated filing system that would send property owners automated reminders, instead of the staff having to do it manually.
Throughout her campaign, Franklin spent $78,430 of her total $98,209, as of Tuesday evening.

- WHAT HAPPENED: Michelle Franklin beat Joe James. Now she’ll face a write-in candidate in the Nov. 5 general election, but that challenger’s name will not appear on the ballot.
- THE VOTE: Franklin received 15,106 votes (57.26%) and James received 11,275 (42.74%) votes according to final, unofficial results.
- NEW TERM: Four years, beginning Jan. 7
- SALARY: $173,814
