BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBMA) — A settlement has been reached between the city and the property owner, which was the site of a mass shooting in July. At the time, the property was being leased to a tenant who was using the space as an event center.
ABC 33/40 uncovered in the days following the shooting which killed four people and injured ten others, that the business did not have a license to operate in that capacity. The city then filed legal action which resulted in the venue being padlocked until a settlement was reached in court.
The settlement was reached on October 11th.
According to a city spokesperson through information from the city attorney’s office, the terms of the agreement are the following:
- Property can no longer be rented out as an event space
- Capital improvement efforts must be made
- Opportunity was afforded for tenant to remove belongings from the property
We have reached out asking more specifically what those capital improvement efforts are and are waiting for a response.
