Tavistock Investments: Stick around for the transformation

Aim-traded financial services group Tavistock Investments (TAVI) is transforming itself into a fintech business following the acquisition of a 76.5 per cent stake in Lifetime Financial Management Intermediaries. Tavistock paid an initial consideration of £5.95mn, which included paying down debt. An earnout over a four-year period could increase the total consideration to £9.9mn if Lifetime achieves cash profit targets.

The regulatory burden being imposed on financial advisory firms has increased significantly over the past 10 years, driving up the cost of doing business. As a result, many now find it commercially unsustainable to support lower-value clients and are shedding them, thereby increasing the pool of people without access to financial advice. It is this pool of ‘orphaned’ investors that Tavistock is targeting through its majority ownership of Lifetime. In addition, the group has access to more than 700,000 potential clients via its employee benefits business.

Lifetime’s hybrid financial advisory model breaks down barriers to both financial advice and wealth creation, which will enable Tavistock to provide its services in a highly cost-effective manner. The company’s digital-first platform makes appropriate use of technology and AI, but only in support of qualified professionals and with a human in the loop. There are no minimum income thresholds for clients and no wealth barriers.

Substantial asset backing

The refocus has been enabled by two significant disposals: the sale in 2024 of Tavistock Partners and its Registered Individual network to private equity-backed advice group Saltus Partners for £36mn, and the sale of Tavistock Wealth for £31mn in 2021.

Tavistock received a deferred consideration of £9.5mn from the Saltus transaction in December 2025 and should bank the final payment of £5.5mn (1.25p) later this year. In addition, the company has now received a £2mn dividend from IFA group LEBC following the disposal of LEBC’s wholly owned subsidiary, Aspira Corporate Solutions, to Titan Wealth. Tavistock expects to receive further dividend payments of £1.75mn later this year and £3.75mn the year after. It means pro forma net cash of £9.1mn is set to rise sharply once £11mn of outstanding deferred payments and dividends are received by the company. To put this into perspective, Tavistock only has a market capitalisation of £16.4mn.

So, you’re not only getting a free ride on the investment in Lifetime but also last year’s acquisition of Alpha Beta Partners, a London and Bath-based asset management business with £3bn in assets under management. Acquired for £6mn in February 2025, the company delivers institutional portfolio management services at a retail price, so that clients benefit from collective buying power, as well as competitive dealing charges. Alpha Beta offers a range of diversified, multi-asset mandates with risk profiles, levels of active management and portfolio structures tailored to suit client needs. Admittedly, the timing of the acquisition could have been better. That’s because, after joining the group, one of Alpha Beta’s largest clients was acquired by a rival, which led to the termination of its relationship.

That news, combined with a first-half operating loss of £1mn and a negative investor reaction to the Lifetime acquisition, explains why Tavistock’s share price has halved since August and is now below my 4p entry level. However, the shares are massively oversold – the 14-day relative strength indicator (RSI) is just 17 out of 100 – and have bounced strongly every time in the past 12 months when the RSI has been at such a depressed level.

The shares are also trading on a 63 per cent discount to the company’s last reported net asset value of 8.1p (30 September 2025) and on an even greater discount to sum-of-the-parts valuations, even though the company has a record of selling businesses for material premiums to their carrying value.
