Insurance comparison is still confusing for many UK drivers, says SimplyQuote founder

Comparing car insurance should be one of the easiest ways for drivers to save money, yet many motorists across the UK still find the process confusing, according to the founder of insurance comparison website SimplyQuote.

Chris Richards, founder of SimplyQuote, says many drivers struggle to understand the differences between policies when comparing insurance quotes online, even when prices appear similar.

“On the surface, comparison websites make it look like choosing an insurance policy is simply about finding the lowest price,” Richards said. “But two policies with similar premiums can offer very different levels of cover, and that’s where many drivers become confused.”

Insurance comparison websites allow motorists to see multiple quotes from insurers in one place, helping drivers avoid contacting providers individually. However, Richards believes the wide range of options and policy variations can make it difficult for consumers to understand exactly what they are buying.

“Price is obviously important, but it shouldn’t be the only factor people look at,” he said. “The excess, optional extras and the level of cover included can all make a big difference if someone needs to make a claim.”

According to Richards, many drivers focus heavily on headline prices without fully understanding how policies differ. This can sometimes lead to motorists choosing cover that may not provide the protection they expect if something goes wrong.

“Insurance is something people only really think about when they need to make a claim,” he said. “That’s why it’s important to make sure the policy actually provides the level of protection someone expects.”

Richards launched the UK insurance comparison platform SimplyQuote to help consumers compare policies more easily and better understand the cover they are choosing.

He says the aim of the platform is to simplify the comparison process and help drivers make more informed decisions when choosing insurance.

Richards recently discussed the challenges surrounding insurance comparison in an article for Entrepreneur, titled “How Chris Richards Built SimplyQuote to Simplify Insurance Comparison,” where he explained the motivation behind launching SimplyQuote and the wider issues drivers face when comparing insurance policies online.

While insurance comparison tools have made it easier for drivers to access quotes from multiple insurers, Richards believes the industry still needs to focus more on helping consumers understand policy differences rather than simply presenting price comparisons.

“Technology has made comparing insurance faster and easier,” he said. “But the next step is helping people clearly understand what those policies include so they can make better decisions.”

With household budgets under pressure due to the rising cost of living, Richards says many drivers are now paying closer attention to their insurance costs.

Drivers naturally want to save money wherever they can,” he said. “But the goal shouldn’t just be to find the cheapest policy. It should be to find cover that offers the right level of protection at a fair price.”

Richards believes improving transparency and helping drivers better understand their options will play an important role in the future of insurance comparison.

“Insurance should be simple to compare,” he said. “If drivers understand what they’re buying, they can choose cover with far greater confidence.”
