GREENVILLE, Pitt County — A Greenville man was arrested on charges of identity theft and is accused of fraudulent insurance deals, according to NC Department of Insurance.
NC Insurance Commissioner Mike Causey announced 43-year-old Nicholas McArthur Bennett of Greenville was arrested and charged with two counts of identity theft and obtaining property by false pretense, both felonies.
Special agents with the Department of Insurance’s Criminal Investigations Division say Bennett obtained two individuals personal information including their names, date of births and social security numbers. Transactions were made and Bennett is accused of submitting and selling life insurance policies to numerous companies.
According to arrest warrants, Bennett obtained a total of $151,068.90 from the American-Amicable Group, Great Western Insurance Co., Liberty Bankers Insurance Group, Lincoln Heritage Life Insurance Co. and United Home Life Insurance Company.
The offenses happened on Dec. 19, 2023.
Authorities arrested Bennett on Thursday, August 15. He was later released after posting a $300,000 secured bond.
“This case was extremely complex and I wish to thank all of the agents involved in bringing it to light,” Commissioner Causey said. “Consumers should be on the lookout to ensure their private information does not fall into the wrong hands. Our department will continue to pursue and prosecute all manner of insurance-related fraud crimes in North Carolina.”
