The risk of fire is devastating, leaving behind not only material losses but often human lives as well. Precautionary measures like checking electrical safety, handling flammable liquids or aerosol cans with care, and installing smoke detectors and fire alarms are indeed good investments. However, fire sometimes occurs in places we cannot monitor or control, making insurance policies the only remedy for repairing damage caused by a blaze. This is an experience shared by the residents of a building on Maršala Tolbuhina Street in Novi Beograd, which was engulfed in flames in the early hours of June 24.

The fire erupted on the ground floor, engulfing the catering establishment and then raced up to the apartments above. Residents were quickly evacuated, thankfully with no casualties. Despite the swift intervention of fire crews, the material damage was significant. The scene from the disaster site was devastating.
The Miščević family’s first-floor apartment suffered devastating fire damage. Fortunately, they had a policy with Dunav Insurance Company. Thanks to a quick damage assessment, Ms. Miščević received compensation within just 48 hours.

Milorad Radić, the director of the claims department at Dunav Insurance Company, underscores the importance of swift and efficient damage assessment and payment, highlighting it as both a professional responsibility and a humane obligation. He emphasizes that even relatively small investments in insurance can provide much-needed financial resources in unexpected situations, as experienced by the Miščević family.
“For a 50-square-meter apartment, such as the one that burned down, our standard ‘Home Guard’ insurance package costs around 3,600 dinars annually, or about 300 dinars per month. This insurance package protects against a wide range of risks, including fire, burglary, water damage, breakage of building fixtures, and glass breakage,” Radić said.
Radić highlights that Dunav Insurance Company’s “Home Guard” package offers additional coverage beyond the standard risks mentioned. This includes insurance for up to two household members, flood and torrent damage, earthquake, unexpected events, impact of an unknown motor vehicle, and general liability. Policyholders can customize their coverage by selecting the specific risks they want to insure their property against and choose their preferred payment method: 12 monthly installments, quarterly, semi-annual, or annual upfront payment.

Lawyer Branko Kolšek, on behalf of the Miščević family, expressed their sincere gratitude to Dunav Insurance Company. He emphasized the company’s record-fast damage assessment and compensation payment, which will significantly aid the family in recovering from this unfortunate event.
While the swift response from Dunav was commendable, Kolšek pointed out that opting for a higher premium could have resulted in a larger compensation amount for the Miščević family. This stresses the importance of building a strong insurance culture, encompassing not just property protection but also personal aspects like life, health, and travel insurance.

Kolšek also shared his own experience with a fire that damaged his cottage in Slovenia, for which his father had secured a policy. However, as he noted, all other cottage owners in the area also have insurance without exception.
Besides the Miščević family’s apartment, four other Dunav-insured apartments have reported fire damage. Dunav urges affected policyholders to contact their toll-free contact center at 0800-386-286 or visit www.dunav.com to initiate damage assessment and compensation as soon as possible.
