The Chronicle Sunshine Fund has become the custodian of the Ponteland Duck Race, which was established in 1985
The Chronicle Sunshine Fund is set to take over a historic event in a Northumberland Village. The charity, which provides specialist and adapted equipment to children and families living with disabilities in the North East, has become the new custodian of the Ponteland Duck Race, taking on more than 40 years of history.
Ponteland Rotary Club confirmed the “emotional decision” to close in January, saying it had suffered a decline in membership which made its activities unsustainable. The Rotary Club organised a number of events in the village in addition to the Duck Race, including the Santa’s Sleigh event in December and June’s Party in the Park.
Members had hoped that the closure would not prevent future events going ahead, and the Sunshine Fund has stepped in. Ponteland Rotary Club is in discussions with a number of organisations to take on its other events before the closure at the end of July.
David Wilson, head of the Sunshine Fund, said: “We’d like to say a huge thank you to Ponteland Rotary Club, it’s a real privilege to be taking over this fantastic event. As one of the longest standing children’s charities in the North East, we understand the significance of community events like these and their deep-rooted connection to the region, and we are excited to continue and grow the legacy of the Duck Race, and introduce ourselves to the people of Ponteland.
“At The Sunshine Fund we are committed to providing inclusive opportunities for children with disabilities and additional needs, and this event aligns perfectly with our mission as Ponteland Park is accessible, meaning all families can get involved.”
John Cooper, senior vice president of Ponteland Rotary Club, said: “We were really keen to find an organisation that would continue this community event for Ponteland and we’re delighted that the Sunshine Fund have stepped up to take it on. We’re looking forward to working with them to make this year a success.”
Since 1985, the Duck Race is thought to have raised about £150,000, with all proceeds going to good causes. As the race has grown over four decades, it moved from a stretch of the River Pont into Ponteland Park.
This year’s Ponteland Duck Race takes place in Ponteland Park on Sunday, September 6, 2026. Opportunities for businesses to get involved through sponsorship and prize donations, along with further details, will be announced in due course.
