What role does Dark Energy play in the study of the universe?

The University of Virginia is reportedly using data from an instrument in Arizona to research cosmic structure. As a result, the team of scientists has created the largest 3D map of the Universe.

As per Universe Today, the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) “sits on a telescope high above the Sonoran Desert.” It is one of the tools of choice to get hold of the mystery of dark energy by diving deeper into the “positions of galaxies and other objects.”

The nature of Dark energy remains unclear, and ongoing research is underway to unravel its mystery.

Study leader Satya A. Gontcho explained that better mapping of galaxies can help one understand dark matter and show how “the visible matter in galaxies is distributed along that substructure.”

“If you are able, from a picture, to add a third dimension in the form of a very precise distance measurement of where galaxies are, you are effectively creating a 3D map of where galaxies are located compared to each other, from your viewpoint here on Earth,” Gontcho said. “Galaxies are not located at random — they follow a subtle, special pattern. They are located on a substructure made of dark matter in the universe.”

The robotic survey instrument DESI has already been helping with an extensive research study on the positions of galaxies, stars and quasars. The instrument began collecting data in May 2021 and will reportedly continue through 2028. The instrument uses 5000 robotic eyes that aim towards individual optical fibers. The robotic instrument has helped scientists cover larger square degrees of the sky while fostering the study of areas that are otherwise difficult to observe, for instance, the Milky Way.

 “It’s almost like an impressionist painting, where we place all these galaxies in 3D and then we’re able to recognise the structures on which they sit,” Gontcho said. “And what’s interesting is that the structure has a pattern and that pattern can be found throughout time.”

What is the role of Dark Energy while studying evolution?

Dark Energy plays a pivotal role in studying the evolution of the universe from its very beginning. Scientists are still studying it, but it has been reported that dark energy accounts for about 70% of the cosmic background. 

Scientists have been working on how dark energy not only pushes galaxies apart but also seemingly fosters the expansion of the universe. Although these are merely ongoing observations, the theories have yet to be proven. However, this study emphasizes the role of Dark energy in holding everything together. 

Satya A Gontcho described Dark Matter as somewhat of a “growth hormone.” She pointed out that, while it is not known exactly what it is, they know how dark energy actually “compels the universe to expand faster and faster.” Dark energy and its subsequent effects might shift how people perceive the universe and its fate in the near future.
