Rhode Island Energy warning customers of scammers threatening power shutoffs

PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — Rhode Island Energy said that customers should be aware of scammers impersonating employees of the energy company threatening to shut off customers’ power supply.

The company said that scammers are using phone, text, and email to either offer discounts in order to receive personal information or are threatening in order to receive an immediate payment.

Rhode Island Energy said that it will not disconnect service without prior advance notice and will not call about refunds.

Callers should also ask if the scammer can provide the last five digits of their account, as they would not have access to that information if they are not from the company.

Anyone who suspects they received a scam call or message should contact 1-855-743-1101 and their local law enforcement agency.

More information on the scams can be found here.
