The Portuguese Government has submitted the updated draft of its National Energy and Climate Plan (NECP 2030) for public consultation. The NECP 2030 outlines eight objectives, 65 lines of action and 297 measures to transition towards climate neutrality by 2045. Among the key targets of the updated draft is to achieve a 51% share of renewable energy in the country’s gross final energy consumption by 2030, a target previously set to 47%. Portugal aims to promote renewable energy potential (particularly solar and onshore/offshore wind technologies) to increase solar capacity to 20.8 GW and wind to 10.4 GW (onshore) and 2 GW (offshore). The document also prioritizes energy storage, targeting the installation of pumped storage hydro, electrolysers to produce green hydrogen (from 2.5 GW to 5.5 GW) and battery technologies at a later stage.
The updated NECP will be under public consultation during a 45-day period, until 5 September 2024, to integrate contributions from civil society before sending it to the Assembly of the Republic for discussion.
