Most US ‘green home’owners would recommend energy-efficient homes to friends

More than nine in ten American owners of energy-efficient homes would recommend them to friends, according to new research from the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB).

The study, which focused on homeowner satisfaction rather than buyer intent, found 94% would recommend a green home to a friend, 92% would purchase another and 90% were satisfied knowing they had made the right environmental choice.

More than half of respondents, 55%, believed the benefits of energy efficiency outweighed the cost, while 71% said green homes are of higher quality.

Low utility bills, energy efficiency and better insulation topped the list of features homeowners were most satisfied with.

Matt Belcher, Co-Chair of the NAHB Energy and Green Building Subcommittee, said: “Historically, studies have focused on interest in green among buyers in the market or on trends as reported by industry professionals.

“While that’s certainly important information, it doesn’t always get to the heart of what new buyers want to know, which is: ‘How satisfied are green homeowners with their decision?’”

The findings point to growing consumer confidence in energy-efficient housing, with satisfaction levels remaining high across both environmental and financial considerations.
