Van insurance premiums fall after settled spring

Van insurance premiums fell 4.5% in the three months to August, according to Defaqto’s September 2026 Quarterly Van Insurance Price Index.

It found that quoted prices are now 11% below the same period last year and 16% lower than April 2025.

Monthly data revealed that prices were down 1.8% in June, 1.9% in July, and 0.9% in August.

This follows a flat spring, when prices remained stable from March to May.

Northern Ireland recorded the smallest fall at five per cent, while the North West saw the largest at 12%. In terms of age categories, annual reductions ranged from eight per cent to 13% with drivers under 26 recording the largest falls and those over 70 the smallest.

Samuel Pompilis, market insights consultant at Defaqto, said: “In our sample, one insurer increased prices by almost five per cent, while another reduced them by more than 11%. Insurers are taking different approaches, and the market average alone cannot capture those decisions.”
