The Bainbridge Christmas Lights project, launched during the Covid-19 pandemic to lift village spirits, has received a £450 grant from housing association Broadacres’ Community Development Fund.
The money has helped fund the connection of the lights to the village power grid, paving the way for a more sustainable and affordable display for years to come.
Louise Alder, who founded the project alongside other volunteers, said: “It is such a help to us now and in the future because using the grid will save us about £400 a year making the annual event more sustainable.”
Previously, the lights—which decorate five locations across the village—were powered by batteries, costing volunteers more than £500 a year.
The annual switch-on has become a highlight of the festive season, bringing together residents for carol singing and mulled wine on the green.
Mrs Alder said: “Lots of people have commented on how they enjoy the lights.
“The green was very dark before and the lights make the whole village look more friendly.”
The display has even attracted praise from as far afield as Bainbridge in the United States, after photos were shared on Facebook.
The lights were first installed during the pandemic when the village felt particularly dark and empty.
Mrs Alder and her team of volunteers decided to bring “a bit of sparkle” to the community.
They began by raising funds to illuminate what is known locally as the Manor House Tree, and the decorations have since expanded.
The latest funding will help ensure the project is both environmentally and financially sustainable.
The Broadacres Community Development Fund supports local organisations, groups and projects in areas where Broadacres has homes.
All grants are approved by the Association’s own residents.
This year’s Christmas lights switch-on will take place on 7 December.
