BROOKLIN—The U.S. Department of Energy has accepted the Brooklin Climate Response Committee into the 4th cohort of the Energy Transitions Initiative Partnership Program. The program works with remote and island communities across the country, providing the technical assistance needed to implement solutions to local energy challenges and transition to a more sustainable and affordable energy system. Brooklin seeks to create a more resilient electrical system that encourages the integration of renewable energy to mitigate climate change.
The Climate Response Committee will engage local stakeholders, the Island Institute, the National Renewable Energy Labs and Department of Energy offices to address a goal in the town’s 2023 Comprehensive Plan: “Adopt appropriate climate change mitigation practices to reduce the Town’s carbon emissions.” The committee will focus on three broad themes: a reliable local system, renewable energy in public buildings, and equitable access to affordable renewable energy.
As with their current informational forums on energy efficiency and climate science, the Brooklin Climate Response Committee will hold public meetings where residents may learn about, comment on and influence the development of the ETIPP projects. Brooklin residents interested in participating in this program are welcome to contact Grace Carrier, gcarrier@islandinsitute.org, to become involved as a Friend of the Committee.
