GARDEN CITY, Kan. (KWCH) – By a margin of about 33%, or a little more than 600 votes, voters in Garden City said “yes” to extending a 0.50% sales tax in the city to go toward property tax relief and street projects described as “transportation improvements.”
The question for voters was as follows: “Shall the City of Garden City be authorized to levy a retailers’ sales tax in the amount of .50% to take effect upon expiration of the city’s existing .50% sales tax on Oct. 1, 2025, and expire after 10 years, with revenues to go toward property tax relief and transportation improvements?”
On its website, the City of Garden City listed several projects completed with funding from the half-cent sales tax.
“Without the continuation of this sales tax, an increase of 16.6 mills in the City property tax rate would be necessary to maintain operations as currently delivered. An equivalent amount of reductions in general fund operations would be required to avoid an increase in property taxes,” the city explained.
Based on 2023 sales tax collections, the city said a half-cent (0.50%) sales tax is equivalent to $4,640,000 for the city budget.
