Facial recognition technology leads to arrest of Cardiff robbery suspect

It followed a report a mobile phone had been snatched in the city centre

Facial recognition technology was used in the arrest of a robbery suspect in Cardiff, police have said. Officers were called to reports a mobile phone had been snatched at a stall on St Mary Street in Cardiff.

The incident happened at around 1.30pm on Friday, September 26, South Wales Police said.

A spokesperson said: “Using retrospective facial recognition and CCTV footage, a 31-year-man was arrested on suspicion of robbery. Enquiries are on-going.

“Retrospective facial recognition technology compares still images of faces of unknown subjects against a reference image database.”
