Quiktrip suing St. Charles city over sales tax dispute

ST. CHARLES, Mo. – St. Charles faces a new multi-million dollar lawsuit over a tax on the sale of potato chips, candy bars and sodas.

Quiktrip is suing the city of St. Charles over its one-percent sales tax. It’s also known as the “tourism tax.”.

According to the St. Louis Post Dispatch, the tax applies to any restaurant that sells prepared food or meals.

Quiktrip’s lawsuit comes after St. Charles’ Finance Director blocked the renewal of the convenience stores’ liquor licenses.

The city also requested St. Charles County officials place $4 million liens on Quiktrip’s two St. Charles stores.

If the city wins the lawsuit, the tourism tax could be applied to other convenience stores.
