Details of Gov. Jim Pillen’s property tax proposal revealed

Gov. Jim Pillen is preparing to propose legislation in a special session of the Nebraska Legislature to reduce property taxes. Monday, members of his administration briefed reporters on some of the ideas behind those proposals, and on figures they said show how the plan would work.

These are the briefing materials that were distributed. After the cover page, the first three pages provide bullet-pointed highlights of the plan. That’s followed by figures showing how much property taxes would be cut overall, and where the money to pay for those cuts would come from. Then there is a list of which sales tax exemptions would be ended, along with estimates of how much that would raise. That’s followed by a table of how much the owner of a $275,000 house would save in various locations. And finally, there’s an overview of how the tax burden would be shifted and reduced by various funding sources.
