(WKYT)—For today’s Good Question, Thomas asks: “So I was wondering, why on my property taxes it shows me paying a ‘health’ tax. What is that?”
If you live in Fayette County that “Health” portion is funding for the Lexington-Fayette County Heath Department.
Looking at the breakdown of property taxes in Fayette County, there are several agencies funded by that money. State and County are pretty obvious. So is school, that’s where a lot of the funding for Fayette County Public Schools comes from.
Extension Services goes to the UK extension program. They fund a lot of stuff, including programs that can teach people about gardening.
Soil and Water Conservation is for the Fayette County Soil and Water Conservation District, which promotes conservation and responsible management of natural resources.
The health department and Lextran also receive funding from those taxes.
Finally, depending on which tax district you live in, some portion of your garbage, street lights, and street cleaning will be paid for with those taxes.
