NORTHSTATE, Calif. — If you were affected by any wildfires this year the California State Board of Equalization wants to remind you that you may be eligible for property tax relief.
To qualify, the loss estimate has to be at least $10,000 of the current market value of the property. The damaged property could be eligible for a reduction in property taxes and if you already paid your property taxes, you may get a refund. Fire survivors who own damaged properties may also apply for a deferral of the next installment of property taxes with no penalties or interest.
“Our heart goes out in state government to those who have experienced a loss. We know the kind of shock and trauma that follows that, and we want to be as helpful as we can in rebuilding your life financially,” said Sally Lieber, chair of State Board of Equalization.
To be eligible, property owners will have to file a claim with their County Assessor’s Office within 12 months of the date of damage. You can find more information on the Board of Equalization’s website.
