COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
The Boone County Collector’s Office said Thursday that it had received about 3,200 applications from seniors seeking a property tax break.
The number was released about halfway through the application period, which began in July and runs through September.
To be eligible, property owners must be at least 62 years old, own their primary residence and be responsible for real estate taxes on that residence. Applications are posted on the county collector’s website.
The tax break effectively freezes seniors’ property taxes where they are when the homeowner applies. If the property tax burden increases in the future, seniors will receive a credit to negate that increase on their tax bills.
Voters approved the tax break in April.
