BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – The North Dakota insurance commissioner is warning people about rehab fraud schemes.
Insurance Fraud Unit Director Dale Pittman said scammers will reach out to people seeking addiction rehab. They often offer to help sign the victim up for insurance and pay for their flights out of the state, which is a major red flag. He said instead of giving quality care, scammers will bill insurance companies for treatments and services that either didn’t happen or aren’t actual treatments, like tarot readings.
“Folks who legitimately need treatment— and this is a problem— should seek out legitimate, local, licensed therapists in the state. If you need insurance, go to a licensed insurance agent and see what you qualify for. Go through those legitimate routes to get the therapy you need,” Pittman said.
Pittman said sometimes, scammers will abandon their victims in other states after flying them out.
