Steuben County on Saturday detailed a few ways residents suffering flood damage from Friday’s rainstorm can seek help.
Residents can call the 211 Helpline by dialing 2-1-1 and provide their address, contact information and type of damages. Individuals will be connected with the appropriate community service organization that can assist with their needs.
In addition to 211, residents with internet access may also complete the Damage Self Report Tool hosted by the New York State Division of Homeland Security and Emergency Services at https://arcg.is/0ybK4H0
Utilizing both of these resources will allow the county and its partners to more quickly assess the needs while also documenting damage, said the Steuben County Office of Emergency Management.
Instead of donating goods, the county is encouraging people interested in contributing to the recovery effort to make monetary donations to the “Steuben County Flood Relief Fund” to assist non-profit agencies that are helping local flood victims.
This fund is administered by the United Way of the Southern Tier and donations can be sent to:
United Way of the Southern Tier
P.O. Box 284
Elmira, NY 14902
Make checks payable to “UWST Steuben County FRF.”
All donations to United Way of the Southern Tier for the Steuben County Flood Response Fund will be fully invested in flood relief with no monies withheld for administrative costs, according to United Way President and CEO Stephen M. Hughes.
“Steuben County sincerely thanks residents and businesses for the outpouring of support,” stated the Office of Emergency Management.
The Red Cross also opened a temporary shelter for victims of the flood at the Corning-Painted Post High School.
The shelter will be open until Monday.
