City to fund phase two of Drewrys Brewery demolition

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – The old Drewrys Brewery building in South Bend is a step closer to “last call.”

The city’s redevelopment commission agreed on Thursday to fund phase two of the ongoing clean up and demolition project.

Phase two calls for knocking down the remaining structures, including the bottling house and four silos, at a cost of $1.2 million.

“After that, we would look at what we call phase three, which would involve removing all the remaining concrete and brick foundations from the site, getting it to a shovel-ready state,” says South Bend Director of community Investment Caleb Bauer.

Drewrys closed its South Bend operation in 1972 after it was purchased by the Heileman Brewing Company.
