Children’s Defense Fund CEO discusses child advocacy amid election year in Battle Creek

The president and CEO of the Children’s Defense Fund (CDF) was in Battle Creek Thursday to learn more about the challenges West Michigan families face and the improvements they hope to see after the upcoming election.

Starsky Wilson met with parents at Kellogg Community College, urging that it is a critical year of heightened, political debate and that the nation does not appear to be listening to the voices of children and their caretakers.

Wilson said that these listening sessions will help guide the CDF in its work.

“It pushes against narratives where people say that folks don’t care about what’s going on in the kids or in the community,” Wilson said. “Every one of these people is giving up their evening to come and say, ‘we’re going to cast a better vision for children in Battle Creek.'”

The CDF is partnering with R. I. S. E. Corps. Freedom School to put together another event for students on Friday called, “the Harambe Read Aloud and Freedom School Site Tour,” which will taken place at 235 North Avenue from 8:30 a.m. to 10 a.m., officials said.
