LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – No one can control when it heats up outside during the summer months. When looking to avoid a high electric bill, it’s all about curbing that cost.
Enrique Perez has been a Lansing resident for over 20 years, and he is all about cutting costs, including his electricity bill with the Board of Water and Light.
Perez uses space heaters in the winter to stay warm and black-out blinds and fans to stay cool in the summer.
“So, you don’t use an air conditioner at all?” News 10′s Marz Anderson asked Perez.
“I do, but only just enough to get the house cool. Just about three to five hours then shut it down,” said Perez.
For some people staying cool in the summer isn’t a luxury but a necessity. During the hottest months of the year, you may be questioning why your BWL bill is so high. Anna Munie, Manager of Energy Planning and Decarbonization says using electricity during on-peak hours could be a factor but it’s only 1.3 cents.
“Energy demand tends to be higher during those hottest hours of the day in the summer and so those will be on peak hours for BWL are on peak hours are 1 p.m. to 8 p.m.,” said Munie.
Munie says BWL’s electricity rates have been set by the company’s board of commissioners since November 2023.
On peak hours use of air conditioners, pool pumps, and other electronics, and the size of a home could increase the cost. Munie recommends setting your air conditioner each day and using an energy-saving mode and try using electricity during off-peak hours.
“High temperature, high humidity days are where we see the most electric usage from our customers and there for try to provide this education and tips on ways to reduce their energy usage,” said Munie.
“There will be changes but the changes will be on you,” said Perez. Making every cent count in hopes of keeping energy cost affordable.
