A heating expert shared the best time to use your heating to keep your home warmer for longer and help reduce your winter energy bills
With soaring energy costs and households watching every penny, leaving the heating on throughout the day simply isn’t viable for many families. Some opt to keep it ticking over on low all day, whilst others switch it on for brief spells morning and evening, reports the Express.
Fortunately, an expert has revealed the most effective method for using your heating to maintain warmth in your home for extended periods.
Llewellyn Kinch, CEO and co-founder of MakeMyHouseGreen, said: “With things getting chillier as winter sets in, people depend more on their heating to stay warm in the house. Night tends to suck the heat out of a house in winter. Who wants to get up in the morning to a freezing house?
“If you use your home heating in one key way, you and your family won’t have to.”
The specialist has recommended utilising your heating during the night hours to ward off the cold until daybreak. To strike a balance between energy conservation and household comfort during the night, the professional suggested turning the heating on for an hour before retiring to bed, typically between 10pm and 11pm.
Allow it to run for a few hours before switching it off via a timer, ensuring you remain cosy throughout the night and into the morning. The expert added: “That way, the house won’t get too cold at night, and it won’t require so much energy to heat it up again on those frosty mornings.”
According to the specialist, the crucial factor in maintaining warmth throughout your home on winter evenings is activating your heating system during the evening hours. By following this advice, the heating expert pointed out you’ll clock a marked improvement not just in the comfort levels of your property, but your utility costs should take a dip too.
The specialist went on: “Wherever you live, using your heating system optimally like this will make a difference. Nights are colder everywhere, and night is when the house cools down the most, so turning the heating on an hour or so before you go to bed and letting it run for a couple of hours will make a huge difference.
“Do this along with other insulation tips, and you should feel a change. It’s all about maintaining consistent heat and avoiding spikes in energy consumption.”
Experts also suggest drawing your curtains and keeping doors firmly closed to trap warmth inside, whilst draught excluders are your best mate in the battle against the cold.
Pop these around window frames, exterior doorways, and don’t forget the letterbox – they’re brilliant for keeping your gaff snug as a bug.
