Around nine million pensioners will receive between £100 and £300 to help with winter energy bills.

What are phishing scams and how can you recognise them?
The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) is warning all pensioners to be on the lookout for fake text messages relating to this year’s Winter Fuel Payments. Payments of between £100 and £300 are due to start landing in bank accounts from this month, but these will be issued automatically.
Posting on X (formerly twitter), DWP wrote: “If you get a text about the ‘Winter Fuel Payment’ or the ‘Winter Fuel Allowance’, it is a scam. Winter Fuel Payments are automatic, you do not need to do anything.”
This warning comes as the DWP recently ramped up its social media campaign in partnership with Action Fraud to raise awareness of these scams across its social media channels. These scams – which see fraudsters exploit pensioners by posing as government officials processing Winter Fuel Payment applications – are now increasing ahead of the payment window opening.

These ‘phishing scams’ enable crooks to lure people to click on a link which can take them to a fake website – which may appear completely genuine – and enter their personal and financial details, unknowingly giving criminals access to sensitive data.
The DWP message is clear – the majority of Winter Fuel Payments will be issued automatically, only a small number of pensions need to make a claim.
The UK Government will never ask for bank details by text. Anyone who receives a text message inviting them to apply for a payment should not engage with it and instead forward it to 7726.
It’s important for older people in Scotland to be aware that they will not receive a Winter Fuel Payment as this has now been replaced by Pension Age Winter Heating Payment. This follows similar eligibility criteria to DWP, but will be issued automatically by Social Security Scotland from this month.
Social Security Scotland issued a similar warning to pensioners last month.
Social Security Scotland has emphasised it will never ask for personal or financial details by text or email or ask people to reply by text or email.
Work and Pensions Secretary Pat McFadden recently said: “If you get a text message about Winter Fuel Payments, it’s a scam. They will be made automatically so you do not need to apply.
“These despicable attempts by criminals to target people are on the rise. We are raising awareness to make it harder for fraudsters to succeed.
“If you receive a suspicious message about Winter Fuel Payments, don’t engage – forward it to 7726 and delete it immediately.”
Winter Fuel Payments will automatically be paid into people’s bank accounts with eligible pensioners receiving a letter beforehand saying how much they will receive. Payments will be made between mid-November and December 2025.
