CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – With Tropical Storm Debby barreling toward the Carolinas, both states have issued state of emergencies.
State of emergencies allow officials to take appropriate action and ensure movement of resources to do things like eliminate power outages and carry essential supplies.
Duke Energy is among those preparing for the impacts of Debby.
“I always say if there is ever a storm with a name coming your way, you should have a plan in place,” Duke’s Jeff Brooks said. “I think we are in good shape at the moment. We are going to be watching the forecast over the next 24-48 hours.”
Duke has crews on standby in both Carolinas, and sent hundreds of linemen and utility workers to Florida.
“We are going to see conditions with Debby that were very similar to Florence…that slow plotting pace of storm with heavy rain,” Brooks said.
The potential for flooding also has state leaders concerned. The State Emergency Operations Center is in an enhanced watch mode, preparing response plans and ready to help local governments.
“Prepare now if you haven’t done so,” NC Emergency Management’s Justin Graney said ahead of the storm. “Go to readync.gov, and you should have a disaster kit and and a plan in place.”
Disaster kits should include food, water, medications, flashlights and batteries.
