(WPBN/WGTU) — Consumers Energy is warning customers to keep an eye out for potential utility scams.
In recent years, Consumers Energy said they have seen an increase in scams where someone is pretending to work for them in order to scam their customers out of money.
Consumers Energy said they will never request personal information or payments over the phone, demand payment in-person or by pre-paid credit cards.\
All employees or contractors will have a company identification badge they will show you upon request to verify their identity and will also have brandedConsumers Energy clipboards and apparel.
“There’s going to be a lot of prominent information on them, but that badge in particular is important,” saidConsumers Energy spokesperson Tracy Wimmer.
“We will never just show up at your door and use any kind of scare tactics or threaten in that moment to shut off your service,” Wimmer said. “And we will always provide advanced notice if we need to get into your home.”
Wimmer said if you believe a scammer is at your home, you should lock all your doors and immediately call 911.
