Bitcoin Life launches regulated Bitcoin insurance bonds in the UK

Bitcoin Life, operating as Perpetual21 Limited, secured a full regulatory license in Guernsey on September 17 to function as an international long-term life insurance company. The company immediately launched what it describes as a Bitcoin-denominated whole-of-life insurance bond, a product designed to let long-term holders park their Bitcoin inside a regulated insurance wrapper with built-in estate planning features.

How the product works

A client pays a single premium, either in Bitcoin or fiat currency, and the entire policy value is then held in Bitcoin under institutional custody.

The “whole-of-life” designation means this isn’t term insurance that expires after 20 years. It’s designed to last as long as the policyholder does, and then transfer directly to named beneficiaries upon death. That direct beneficiary transfer is the key selling point: it sidesteps the messy probate processes that can leave crypto holdings in limbo when someone dies without clear instructions for their private keys.

Founder Peter Lane has described the product as a “forever home” for Bitcoin, positioning the bond as a long-term wealth preservation tool denominated in Bitcoin.

Insurance bonds in jurisdictions like Guernsey have long been used by high-net-worth individuals to manage tax obligations on investment gains. By housing Bitcoin inside this structure, policyholders can potentially defer or reduce tax liabilities depending on their home jurisdiction, a feature that traditional crypto custody solutions simply don’t offer.

The partners behind it

BitGo Europe GmbH handles custody. BWCI provides trustee services, Polo Insurance Managers handles oversight, and Carey Olsen, one of the Channel Islands’ most prominent law firms, covers the legal architecture.

Lane has emphasized that Bitcoin is being integrated into a trusted regulatory structure rather than asking regulators to create something new.

Why this matters for Bitcoin holders

Traditional estate planning tools like wills and trusts were designed for bank accounts, real estate, and stock portfolios. They work poorly for bearer assets secured by cryptographic keys. Bitcoin Life’s insurance bond attempts to solve this by placing Bitcoin inside a legal structure that already has clear rules for what happens when the policyholder dies.

The product is aimed at international clients across multiple jurisdictions, which makes sense given Guernsey’s historical role as an offshore insurance hub.
