Monzo Home Insurance – everything you need to know

Sometimes life can feel like a neverending series of unglamorous admin tasks, and home insurance certainly falls into that category. But just like car insurance, you’ll always be grateful if the time comes when you might need it.

Whether you’ve just picked up the keys to your first home, or your renewal is approaching, it’s worth checking you’ve got the right cover in place and that it still meets your needs.

Often, people spend time searching online, but there can be more convenient and simpler ways to get cover too, such as right inside one of your most used apps. That’s where Monzo comes in. It might be best known for its user-friendly approach to banking and Hot Coral-coloured cards, but it also offers a flexible way to protect your home, by offering both buildings and contents insurance.

Keep reading for all you need to know about how home insurance works, what’s included with Monzo Home Insurance and how to get started.

Put simply, buildings and contents insurance are designed to protect the physical building of your home, from something like storm damage, and the contents inside if something was lost or stolen.

Like any insurance policy, each has terms and conditions, exclusions and an excess (the amount to pay if a claim is successful), which all need to be checked and understood before taking out a policy.

Here’s how the two types differ:

Buildings insurance: This protects the actual structure of your home, including roofs, walls, windows and doors, but also the permanent, fitted fixtures of your home such as the fitted cupboards of the kitchen and bathroom’s units such as the sink and bathtub.

With Monzo, the policy also includes outbuildings and garages. The cover is for your main home, not a second property. You can work from home, but the policy doesn’t cover homes used as a place business.

Contents insurance: This is for your possessions inside your home and those you also take outside of the home, such as furniture, furnishings and decor, electrical items such as phones and laptops or white goods, clothes and jewellery, books and kitchen or sports equipment. It’s often hard to put a figure on this, as it’s money spent over time, often decades. But this can be underestimated if it ever came to replacing everything.

Some policies out there will include optional paid extras to single out some items, such as a special watch or jewellery, or perhaps a special plan if your phone or bicycle is damaged or stolen. These add-ons have their own limits and exclusions.

What’s included with Monzo Home Insurance?

Taking away the need to have two separate policies for your home and its contents, Monzo offers both buildings and content insurance as one policy to make one less admin task. It’s all done through the app so there’s no need to keep paperwork safe, or remember separate login details, as all the information is on the Monzo app.

The insurance is underwritten by Chubb, who is responsible for assessing any claims and paying out, if a claim is successful.

For buildings insurance, cover up to £1,000,000 is available, while for contents insurance it is possible to have cover up to £100,000, you choose the limit that’s right for you. An excess applies for each successful claim, you will be able to find the exact amount in your policy documents. If there’s a specific item with more £1,000 within the contents, you can pay to add additional cover for that item, which could include a bicycle, a gadget or jewellery, including watches.

These numbers cover what it would cost to either repair or rebuild the home, or replace part or the entire contents of it.

Policies can also include moving home cover of up to £10,000, so during the next move, belongings are still protected during the relocation, even if it’s in storage (up to 72 hours) meaning there’s one less thing to worry about during the move.

Of course the cost of the cover depends on each individual circumstance and a number of variables, including the type of property, such as flat or a house, whether you own it with a mortgage or not, and the sort of cover you would like.
